Harvard Medical School professor Vitaly Napadow, who has a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering and is also a licensed acupuncturist says ''I've been practicing for eight years and have seen acupuncture help with surprisingly diverse issues, like plantar fasciitis and diabetic neuropathy,'' he said. ''Acupuncture affects many systems in the body, including parts of the brain that are involved with processing emotion and pain.''
Studies show acupuncture alone cut post-chemotherapy fatigue by 31 percent. It also cut hot flashes by 50 percent, and slashed overall cancer pain by 36 percent.
SCOTT DALZIEL needed acupuncture to cure a knee problem. "I had a problem with my right knee and the club sent me for acupuncture and it seems to have worked," said Scott after scoring winning goal.
Dr. Karen Mitchell Lanz based in Louisville, she is a veterinary acupuncturist listed with the American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture. The majority of her patients tend to be older, arthritic dogs. Cats constitute only about 30 percent of her business. Although acupuncture can be successfully used with other animals, and Lanz knows people who have treated dolphins, iguanas and manatees, she works only on cats and dogs.
Dr. Karen Mitchell Lanz based In the United States, an estimated several thousand veterinarians have trained in the practice since the 1970s, according to Dr. Narda Robinson, an osteopathic physician and veterinarian who teaches a course on veterinary acupuncture at Colorado State University. Robinson says that as scientific knowledge increases about how acupuncture works, it is becoming more integrated into treatment in the West. Some places to learn the skill are, including, in addition to Colorado State, the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine and the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, also in Florida. 40 NFL players are treated with Acupuncture regularly by acupuncturist Lisa Ripi. Pittsburgh linebacker James Farrior said: “I’m not the same if I don’t have it. It’s like getting the game plan. You can’t go into the week without either one.”
Ripi, travels at least 20 days each month during the season, treating 40 players on five teams, Jets, Giants, Steelers, Bengals, and Dolphins. She flies to Miami on Sunday, Pittsburgh on Monday, New York on Tuesday, Cincinnati on Wednesday, back to Pittsburgh on Thursday and back to New York on Friday. Players say her sessions are their most important treatment. They feel more loose, more flexible. Mike Hobbs couldn't sleep. For years, it was one of the things that plagued him after returning from a stint in Vietnam. He eventually spent 18 months in a stress unit at the North Chicago Veterans Administration hospital where he was treated for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. After years of therapy, Acupuncture has proven a boon to getting healthier, said Hobbs, who turned to acupuncture after seeing a flier at the veterans center. Having Acupuncture has been the culmination of many years of therapy, Hobbs said. "It happened at the right time in my life to kind of get me healthier than I've been, I think, ever," Hobbs said.
Acupuncture does change the way the brain manages pain, according to University of Michigan researchers. They used brain scans to determine that acupuncture actually improves the functioning of receptors in the brain that can process and dampen pain signals, according to a news release on the work.
